The Ga East Municipal Assembly has marked the celebration of the 50th Republic Anniversary Senior Citizens Lunch to honour senior citizens and their contributions to the community.

The Assembly has decided to recognise and show appreciation for the value and contributions of elderly people to the home, family and society.

According to the Chief Executive, Mr. John Kwao Sackey, throughout history, older people have achieved much for various families, communities and the entire country.

He said this gives ample reason to dedicate a special day in honour of the citizens, who mean so much to the Ga East Municipality.

He mentioned that with improved healthcare, brought about by the introduction and sustenance of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which of course is free for the aged, older citizens were reinforcing their historical roles as leaders.

He said they were also links between the nationals who fought hard to gain independence, and who were still making tireless efforts to contribute to the building of our communities.

Mr. Kwao Sackey pointed out that many older citizens were embarking on second careers, hence, giving the younger ones a fine example of responsibility, resourcefulness, competence and determination.

He said the celebration provides an opportunity, not only to focus on the contributions and needs of older Ghanaians, but to think of how, as a nation, we need to prepare to meet the needs of the future.

He stressed that the 50th Republican Anniversary provides a special occasion for activities, and celebrations which promote positive attitudes toward aging, and recognise the active, healthy, and independent lives many older Ghanaians lead.

He said although the older ones see their efforts as nothing to be applauded, the municipality sees beyond what they see in this direction, for the reason that old age must be recognised for their dedication and service to their communities.

Aside the celebration, 50 certificates and some cash were awarded to 50 older citizens who have contributed in various aspects to the community.

Touching on the theme “Old Age: A Blessing to our Community,” the Chief of Abokobi, Mr. Samuel Nii Adjetey Mohenu, said that everyone, including the elderly, has a role to play in the community, which must be seen as a blessing.

He said as a result of the wisdom of the elderly, they were entitled to respect, and at the same time, it is their responsibility to transmit tradition and knowledge to the communities to which they belong.

“The Holiness code enjoins honour and respect for the senior members of our communities,” he added.

He, therefore, entreated the youth to support the elderly, since old age can sometimes be a period of many challenges in one’s life, adding that it was a phase in life which was often fraught with physical deterioration, which leads to hearing impairment, failing eyesight, and other associated ailments that require support.
